Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in two seasons of Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian, will not appear in future seasons or in Star Wars spinoffs, a Lucasfilm spokesperson told Polygon.
Carano had already sparked controversy for The Mandalorian season 2 after several incidents on social media involving transphobic and anti-non-binary statements. Then, on Wednesday, the MMA fighter-turned-actress shared an Instagram post (since deleted) suggesting that the reactions to her unpopular political and social beliefs were akin to the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust. Reactions on Twitter that viewed Carano’s comparison as anti-Semitic contributed to the trend of the #FireGinaCarano hashtag on the platform.
“Gina Carano is currently not employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans to be employed in the future,” the Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. “Nonetheless, his social media posts denigrating people because of their cultural and religious identity are odious and unacceptable.”
Although Disney Plus and Lucasfilm are currently in the works on The Mandalorian season 3 and several other Star Wars spinoff series (including Rangers of the New Republic, which was rumored to star Cara Dune), there was no official plan to bring back the character of Carano in any capacity. Now, it looks like the actress’ time in the galaxy is officially over.
