The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) wants the government to honor Founders’ Day by striving to bring prosperity to Ghanaians.
In a press release as the nation marks the Founders Day celebration, the PPP said the country’s ancestors were passionate about the prosperity and well-being of Ghanaians and fought for it.
The party lamented that prosperity has currently eluded the majority of citizens.
“Ghana’s more than six decades of existence unfortunately fall short of the living standards aspirations of many Ghanaians. The man who worked hard and led our country to independence, Kwame Nkrumah, would be sad to see the state of the nation for which he sacrificed so much, ”said the statement signed by Director of Communications Felix Mantey .
However, he reminded the President and Parliament that if they have the prosperity of the people at heart, then they must take the following steps:
1. Amend the constitution to prevent the legislature from being part of the executive in any way. Full separation of powers will allow parliament to better control the executive, reduce corruption and guarantee individual freedoms. Depoliticize prosecutions by ensuring that the Department of Justice is separate from the Office of the Attorney General.
2. Although we may have a Minister of Justice as legal adviser and advocate for the government, we need an independent prosecutor whose mandate is not necessarily linked to the political office of the president and who can have independence. to prosecute anyone without political considerations, “he added.
3. Ensure the election of MMDCEs and all members of the Assembly to make them accountable to the people and oriented towards development in their actions and reflections.
Founders Day
4. Founders’ Day is a national holiday formerly observed in Ghana to mark the birthday of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the founding father of Ghana.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo proposed the legislation of August 4 as the founders’ day and September 21 as the Kwame Nkrumah memorial day, both of which will be observed as public holidays.
In March 2019, the Public Holidays Amendment Bill was passed and August 4 was designated as Founders Day and September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
Founders’ Day is reserved for the celebration of the people (the big six) who led Ghana to independence while Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day is reserved for Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of the independence movement of Ghana to commemorate his birthday.
