The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the death threats received by independent investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.
The threats to Manasseh’s life came after an opinion piece written by the journalist on the outcome of the 2020 elections with the headline “ Akufo-Addo MISTAKE and coup d’etat ” which made wrong a political fanatic.
The article discussed the alleged anomalies with Techiman Sud’s parliamentary results and the refusal of residents of Santrokfi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe (SALL) regions to vote for a parliamentary representative.
The threat was emailed to him on Christmas Day, a day after the article was published.
According to GJA, “this is the latest in a series of death threats against Manasseh in recent years. But the venom from the latest death notice emailed to it is toxic enough to stifle life, and that’s why the GJA wants to sound the alarm bells for all to respond.
The Association then condemned this act, describing it as a “barbaric act” which must be fatal by getting to the bottom of things and dealing with the culprit decisively.
The GJA further called on the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security to Mr. Azure Awuni and other journalists across the country who have received death threats.
“In view of the above, we call on the Ghanaian Police Service to investigate, arrest and prosecute the suspect as quickly and resolutely as possible.”
The GJA also called on the President, the National Peace Council, political parties, civil society organizations, religious organizations and all well-meaning Ghanaians to strongly condemn the death threats against Manasseh and other journalists. in the country.
The GJA then urged media partners, national and international, including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the San Frontier reporter (Reporters Without Borders) to condemn the death threats against journalists. in Ghana.
