Glen Johnson revealed that he knew that it was time to retire at half of last season.
The England international, who has 54 caps, hung up his boots at 34 after more than 500 games as a professional.
He played only 10 times for Stoke last year because they were relegated to the championship and were not signed by another team after the expiration of his contract with Potteries.
"It's the day I officially say I'm retired," he told talkSPORT.
"I knew that at half of last season, I was going to talk about one day. I've always wanted to retire at an age where my body always felt good.
"Every player knows when his time is up. Mentally, I've always wanted to stop young enough and you can not always play the game the way you want when you're 34 years old. "
Johnson began his career at West Ham after going through the Upton Park Academy.
In 2003, he moved to Chelsea via a loan to Millwall and won the Premier League and League Cup with the Blues.
The back side was loaned to Portsmouth before making his permanent change in 2009 and was part of the Pompey team that won the FA Cup in 2008.
From Fratton Park, he moved to Anfield and spent six years in Liverpool to win another League Cup.
He left the Reds in 2015 and spent the last three years of his career at Stoke.
Johnson made his debut in England in November 2003 against Denmark and played at the World Cup in 2010 and 2014 as well as at Euro 2012.
