The secretary general of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has threatened to go on strike if the government does not impose restrictions on social gatherings as the surge in active Covid-19 cases persists.
Dr Justice Yankson, in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, stressed on Saturday that healthcare facilities are already “on their knees.”
He therefore reiterated calls for the implementation of stringent measures to curb the outbreak of the disease.
“The question is very simple, and we can only advise, and we can only plead. In the worst case, we give up our tools, but that may not be the solution to this pandemic because we do not control the public purse, we do not control the executive branch. We therefore continue to advise the government.
The doctor further explained that; “Be careful, there are frontline government advisers, and we do our best to interact with them collectively as a group, but the ultimate sanction for a particular activity must come from the president.”
“So as far as we have done the case, the best we can do is continue to advocate for a ban on these social gatherings and if the powers are not really taking this, the worst case is. that we will also repress our tools because we are also tired, ”he was emphatic.
Already, the Association has issued a statement calling on the government to ban religious services, funerals and other social gatherings.
GMA has insisted that with the current trend where an average of 600 people testing positive for the virus per day, a review of the imposition of the restriction is inevitable.
Failure to comply with Covid-19 preventive measures has the potential to further exacerbate the spread of the disease, therefore the government should impose stricter measures in the fight against the pandemic.
Meanwhile, according to the latest update from Ghana Health Service, the country has 3,940 active cases with 390 deaths and 59,553 people have recovered out of 63,883 cases registered so far.
