GNFS launches fire safety education in Cape Coast schools

Cape Coast, May 23, GNA – The Central
The Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a
Fire safety awareness campaign to raise awareness among students
the region.

The campaign focused on "Fire Safety, the Role of Students and Teachers".

The campaign, which is the continuation of a
A similar campaign in 2017 aimed to educate schoolchildren about
basic safety against the fire and get them to become familiar with the equipment
and service activities.

According to ADOI Abdul Wasiu Hudu, Regional Manager
GNFS Public Relations Officer, more than 48 primary schools and 3,000
students from the Cape Coast Metropolis have been sensitized to basic fire safety
practices of the first phase of the campaign.

He said that the second phase, which had up to now
covered 11 of the 16 high schools targeted in the Cape Coast region
Metropolis, would then be extended to all schools in the region.

Mr. Hudu explained that the GNFS had recently
been proactive and away from the fire-fighting approach to fire safety
and prevention, hence the focus on basic students and SHS to imbibe
educating young people about safety so that they can also serve as peer educators.

He said when the fire starts, even if it is
approached at the very beginning, one or two objects will be permanently destroyed
and therefore, it must be prevented at all costs.

Students and teachers who were taken
by the chemistry of combustion, types of fires, causes and prevention
how to use fire extinguishers, congratulated the Service for training.

They acknowledged to be guilty of part of the
dangerous fire practices and is committed to being more careful now than
they have knowledge.

Some of the schools included Aggrey Memorial
SHS, National College of Ghana, Cape Coast Technical Institute, Efutu SHS and Cape
Coast International among others.
