Savanah Regional Minister Muhazu Saeed Jibril threatened to terminate a road contract awarded to former President John Mahama’s brother Edward Mahama if he did not return with immediate effect.

According to the Minister, the payment for the continuation of the project has been made and the contractor therefore has no reason to abandon the post.

The 25-kilometer Daboya-Busunu road project in the North Gonja district awarded to Edward Mahama has been stalled since 2017.

NDC deputy regional communications officer RA Jalilu in his goodwill message at the start of the annual conference of NPP Savanah regional delegates accused the government of abandoning several projects initiated by the NDC administration.

Citing the Dabayo-Busunu road in support of his claim, he said that “the current events in the country do not bode well for the people.

“The NDC would like you to draw the attention of your government to some of the projects initiated by the Mahama administration which have been abandoned or whose execution has stalled for the past five years.

“While you were driving on the Daboya-Busunu road, said project was blocked and therefore passed its completion date. It is a sad development which should be a wake-up call for all of us, ”he added.

But in a blunt response, regional minister Muhazu Saeed Jibril, who attended the delegates’ conference, denied the claim.

The minister revealed that Edward Mahama had abandoned the project site on the grounds that the money to finance the project had not been released.

“The Daboya-Busunu road has by no means been abandoned. The contractor, Edward Mahama is the younger brother of the former president, John Mahama and he said that because NPP came to power he was not going to give a certificate to the Ministry of Roads because he knows he is not would not be paid.

However, Mr. Saeed Jibril observed that funds have been made available for the continuation of the project.

He further alleged that Edward Mahama’s delay was just an attempt to score political points for his brother.

“We followed up with the highway manager and he got paid. So if he’s not there, it means he’s doing it intentionally in the political interest of his brother.

“In the next 2 to 3 months, if he does not come on the site, it means that we will repeal the contract,” he added.
