The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has expressed concern over the reluctance of some parliamentarians to go to the Covid-19 tests scheduled for MPs.

This follows the refusal of some deputies to take advantage of the 3 days allocated to members of the House to participate in a medical screening exercise.

According to reports, less than a third of the House participated in the event that ended last Friday.

“We have made arrangements with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to use 3 days and the 3 days are over, but I am reliably informed that a number of our members have yet to take the opportunity to get screened or even undergo the Covid-19 test.

“Honorable members, I humbly urge you to take this opportunity seriously and take a test by the end of the day,” he said.

The president, in his open address on Tuesday, Jan.26, said the screening exercise had since been extended until close of business today to ensure MPs go for the test.

Currently, Ghana has around 3,613 active cases, with 58,150 recoveries and 372 deaths, with an average of 600 cases recorded daily.

The situation has been described as worrying by the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Medical Association.

Meanwhile, the sitting of Parliament is being held in the tent at Parliament’s premises as part of the temporary measures put in place by House leaders to reduce any potential threat from Covid-19.

Previously, Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin revealed that the sitting will be virtual and as such only a third of the members are expected to be present in the chamber while others have been dealing with business since. their offices.

But today, the House is expected to debate a motion put forward on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, asking the president to take urgent action to absorb student fees at public higher education institutions for university 2020/2021. year.

The government is also urged to extend its support to accredited private universities as part of the national Covid-19 mitigation measures being implemented.
