Gocycle & # 39; s GX is an electric bike that turns heads

Come closer though and you will notice a new clip in the center of the frame. Gocycle has redesigned the folding mechanism and claims that the GX can be broken down in less than 10 seconds. Unlike previous models of the company, you do not have to take off. Simply press the switch and fold the frame in half so that both wheels face each other. A second clasp puts the handlebars on its side, near the front wheel. You can then hold the saddle with your hand and roll the bike like a suitcase. You can also completely remove the seat post and slide it into a rubber loop that holds the folded frame together.

Honestly, I could not fold or unfold the bike in less than 10 seconds. My times have slowly improved, however, and with a little more practice, I'm confident I can do everything in less than 15 seconds. It's pretty fast, in my opinion, not to feel like a chore while preparing to leave the house or office. I can, however, imagine frustrated looks if I spent so much time in front of a subway ticket barrier. Therefore, you should probably stop and fold the bike in a quiet corner before interacting with the public.

It's a smart system, although I wonder how long will last the aforementioned loop. The extensible material is essential to the design and could, I fear, wear out after a few years of daily use. A spokeswoman for Gocycle, however, said the company had tested the folding mechanism and was confident about its durability. For the moment, I will have to trust them.

On the road, the GX behaves like many other electric bikes. It has a 500W motor and a maximum speed of 20MPH, which is legally capped at 250W and 15.5MPH in Europe. (The bike will not be restricted in the United States, where the legislation allows "low speed electric bicycles" with a 750W motor and a maximum speed of 20 MPH.) The GX has three manual speeds that you switch with a traditional grip. the right side. However, the highest of the three remains relatively low, so it is difficult to cross the ceiling of 20 MPH without a steep slope or the ferocity of a winner of the Tour de France.

The bike offers different levels of badistance that you can change in the GocycleConnect application. Preloaded profiles, such as "City" and "Eco", are sensible and explain themselves. However, the "Custom" tab, which allows you to create a driver profile from scratch, interests me more. You can decide when the engine will start – especially the power the rider needs to generate – and the strength of the badistance. For example, you can set a low power threshold to maximize your acceleration at traffic lights. Or, if you want to train, stop the motor badistance for a day.

The GX's 20-inch wheels are larger than a conventional Brompton, but smaller than a road bike or a traditional downhill beast. I liked the driving position, which is pretty straight thanks to the right handlebar, and I have never felt like a child's toy once. The Gocycles are not meant for mountain trails, but I enjoyed the Lockhock rear suspension every time I bounced on a sidewalk or a big speed bump. The hydraulic disc brakes were sharp and the manual gear lever, although basic, was reliable and responsive.

Inside the frame is a 300Wh battery. Gocycle says the GX will transport you up to 40 miles on a single charge, depending on the terrain and the configuration of your support engine. It takes seven hours to recharge or four with an optional quick charger. Unfortunately, I could not test either claim during my brief stint on the bike. The battery is removable, but you can not buy additional batteries and keep a new one in your bag.

The bike is available to order now for £ 2899. It is located between the entry level GS (£ 2499) and the G3 (£ 3,499), both of which use the oldest and slowest disbadembly method. However, the G3 remains the leading model because it has a predictive gear shift, adaptive daylight on the handlebar and other "smart" features that do not exist on the mainstream GX. The three bikes, while expensive, have a competitive price, with the Electric Brompton (£ 2595) and the Folding Hummingbird (£ 4995). As always, you should consider them as replacement vehicles rather than slightly more powerful bikes, to justify the high price charged.
