Agents acting in the intelligence service of the National Crime Agency acted after learning that the bars had been shipped to the Caribbean islands by a private jet from Venezuela.

Gold is now being investigated by the Caymanian authorities on money laundering with the help of the NCA.

Steve McIntyre, his Heathrow commander, said, "We think this cargo was tied to drug cartels operating in South America. Working with partners abroad and in the UK, we were able to stop his movement. "

Nick Jariwalla, of the Fronter Force at Heathrow, said: "Taking money or gold out of the control of criminal networks is hitting them where they feel most, in the pocket."

The gold was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act, following a hearing before the Uxbridge District Court in West London.
