AUSTIN, Texas, March 24, 2019 / PRNewswire / – The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) awarded its highest honor, the SIR Gold Medal, to Alan H. Matsumoto, M.D., FSIR; Daniel Picus, M.D., FSIR; and James B. Spies, M.D., M.P.H., FSIR, at its annual scientific meeting at Austin, Texas. These awards highlight the distinguished and extraordinary services rendered to the SIR or the discipline of interventional radiology.

Alan H. Matsumoto, M.D., FSIR
Matsumoto is professor and director of the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where he has been a faculty member since 1991 and has helped train more than 200 residents in diagnostic radiology and 100 fellows in vascular and interventional radiology. He has published 300 articles and book chapters, given more than 300 invited lectures and scientific conferences and was the principal investigator of the site for 24 clinical trials. He developed and led the main laboratory of the trial that led to the first FDA approved abdominal aortic stent in 1999. Former President of the SIR and Program Chair of the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting in 2004, Matsumoto has also been a member of the US Board of Directors. Daniel Picus, M.D., FSIR

He created the Interventional Radiology Section, of which he was the first leader from 1987 to 2000. He then badumed the role of Division Head in Diagnostic Radiology until 2018. During his career, he has been in charge of radiology. Picus's interest in coding and reimbursement led him to become a member of the editorial board of the AMA CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) of the American Medical Association. He is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, as well as several textbook chapters and scientific exhibitions. Picus delivered the Dr. Charles T. James B. Spies, M.D., M.P.H., FSIR
Spies is a professor of radiology at University of Georgetown University School of Medicine and director of the radiology department at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC. Spies is recognized as an international authority in the field of uterine artery embolization (UAE) for fibroids. He maintains an active clinical practice in the UAE, has conducted extensive research in this area and continues to actively seek out the results of a range of fibroids therapies. He has published more than 100 scientific studies and given more than 400 invited presentations. In addition to being a director of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) for Interventional Radiology since 2016, Spies has held several roles with the SIR, including President of SIR from 2014 to 2015, President of the SIR Foundation. from 2006 to 2008 and member of numerous SIR Committees.
