gPSs are asked to prescribe golf to their patients – after pilot projects have shown that the sport increases fitness, strength and happiness levels.
Family physicians from London, Birmingham and Hampshire are invited to participate in the program, where the NHS offers golf coaching to patients with heart disease or breathing problems.
Pilot projects in South London showed that patients returned to golf experienced triple vigorous activity levels, with significant improvements in life satisfaction, happiness and self-esteem.
The study also revealed an increase in grip strength – an indicator of overall health and longevity – among those attending the sessions.
