Golf: Steve Williams Reveals That He Breached the Rule for Tiger Woods in His Fifth Masters Victory

Kiwi Steve Williams said he broke his rule of not watching the golf course to listen to the unlikely race of his former colleague Tiger Woods to a fifth Masters crown.

Williams, whose public impact with Woods in 2011 ended a partnership of more than a decade, says he no longer looks at golf, but was an exception to the rule this week after the spectacular victory of the 43 years old player in Augusta.

"Since I retired after being younger for Adam Scott – and before him, Tiger Woods, Ray Floyd, Norman Greg, Ian Baker-Finch, Michael Clayton and others – I came back to the game that I love it, "Williams wrote in the The voice of the players website.

"And I'm trying to keep up with the news and I'm going to read about golf – but I'm not watching it.

"Except last monday."

Williams said that he could not miss the opportunity to see if Woods could win his fifth Masters, and was happy that he had been listening.

"Fourteen years old! It's almost impossible to believe. And it's been 11 years since his last major – the US Open at Torrey Pines – that he had no right to win thanks his torn cruciate ligament and fractured tibia.

"But it's Tiger Woods – he's doing things that no one else could dream of doing."

Woods' victory put an end to a serious drought that lasted for eleven years and which, less than two years ago, was struggling to walk after a fourth operation on the back and had pbaded the top 1000 in the world ranking.

Woods abandoned Williams in June 2011, ending a 13-year relationship in which he won 72 victories around the world and won 13 major tournaments.
