The fetish priests, priestesses and all the chiefs of the Traditional Council of Gomoa Akyempim performed rituals to appease the gods of Apam.

The ritual comes after a group of teenagers drowned at sea in Apam on Sunday, March 7.

For traditional rulers, customary rites must be performed because the incident is unprecedented and the gods must be pacified.

After consultation with the gods, the queen mother of Apam, Nana Essel Botchwey III revealed that the gods had demanded a fattened cow, three sheep, 12 hens, 33 yam tubers, three boxes of schnapps among others.

This, she said, must be presented to Nananom before the remaining bodies that have yet to be found are discovered.

In an interview with Adom News, she said the gods were very angry because the children were swimming where they were swimming.

“Nananom made it clear that they were angry so it was a must for us to come here today to do this ritual. And we are happy that everything went well because the first poultry we sacrificed was accepted by our gods.

“We are also cleaning up all the curses and bad omens looming in Apam and in the family of the teens that we have lost,” she told Kofi Adjei of Adam News.

For her part, Sumankwahene of Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council, Nana Okofo Annan cautioned residents, especially children, to respect customary laws.

He noted that the story of the young people who drowned should serve as a lesson for others in the area.

Additionally, the Oshihene Traditional Council of Gomoa Akyempim, Nana Okofo Ohene Ampofo, said they have yet to recover from the shock of the incident.

He said the traditional council, as part of its way of protecting children in the area from the same fate, would ban children from swimming.
