The 20th biennial conference of national delegates of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) ended in Sunyani with the election of Bismark Baisie Nkum as president of the badociation.
In a hotly contested election, Mr. Nkum, Gomoa West district chief, collected 553 votes to beat the current president of the badociation, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, the chief executive officer from Tema Metropolitan, who had 423 votes.
The other running candidate, Emmanuel Asuah Dadzie, managed to get 273 of the votes cast.
Williams Aduum garnered 694 votes to retain his position as senior vice president, while rival Michael Boadi Sarpong won 537 votes.
A woman from the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly, Evelyn Dansoa Boateng, who holds a Master's degree in Restaurant and Hotel Technology, also retained her position as Second Vice-President, garnering 882 votes to 363 voice. his main opponent, Richmond Amponsah Agyabeng.
Mariam Iddrisu was also elected representative of the women's caucus of the badociation, while Seth Oduro Boadu was named treasurer. Eric Kwaku Kusi and Prince S. Fiagadzi were elected respectively to the 1st and 2nd female directors.
In his brief speech of thanks, NALAG's new president, Mr. Nkum, reiterated his commitment to rename the badociation to make it better known to stakeholders in local governance and the general public.
In this regard, it would pursue vigorous programs in line with the common interests of the members of the badociation, while ensuring that NALAG becomes a repository of local governance in the subregion and in Africa as a whole. .
S addressing the conference earlier, Osei Bonsu Amoah, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, stressed that for the country to realize Ghana's vision beyond the badistance provided by the president, it is urgent that the metropolitan, municipal and district meetings transformational flagship programs in the local government administration.
The deputy minister mentioned that the flagship transformation programs include Planting to feed and create jobs, A district, a factory, A village, a dam, Plant for export and rural development, Program of work. infrastructure to reduce poverty, Free SHS, Digital Addressing System and Electronic Technology System, among others, as well as the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
"For us, in the local government sector, the vision of Ghana Beyond Aid and the SDGs will therefore be largely realized if we work diligently and effectively to implement the government's flagship programs and global goals," he said. he declares.
Mr. OB Amoah, also MP for Akwapim South, urged NALAG leaders to work with members to intensify their efforts to avoid over reliance on central government transfers by improving the mobilization of the FG and linking collecting service delivery rates by dedicating a larger portion of their IGF to development projects.
Bono Regional Minister Evelyn Ama Kumi-Richardson, for her part, acknowledged NALAG's key role in Ghana's decentralization process and the progress made to date.
"The achievements of our decentralization process can not and should not be flouted without recognizing the key role played by NALAG, especially because members are the driving force behind all policy implementation in our quest to bring governance local to the doors of our citizens, "she says.
