GOOD SAMARITAN: The Benefits of Physical Exercise for Mental Health

By Charmaine Caldwell, PhD, LPC

American Odessa

The psychological benefits of physical exercise are often overlooked even though research shows that physical activity can improve the symptoms of many existing mental illnesses. Regular exercise can have an impact on mental illness and is often prescribed by physicians as well as by mental health professionals for depression-related symptoms such as fatigue, tension, anger and diminishing of vigor. For people with panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety-related disorders, exercise can help relieve tension and reduce feelings of fear and worry. In some cases, exercise can decrease the intensity and frequency of panic attacks, and some research has shown that IBS symptoms respond to the effects of exercise.

The many ways in which physical exercise promotes positive well-being are:

  • Exercise decreases stress hormones like cortisol. It increases the endorphins that give your mood a natural boost.
  • Physical activity can distract you from negative thoughts and emotions and can distract your mind from your problems.
  • Exercise promotes self-confidence, contributes to weight loss, tone of your body, and maintains radiance and smiles.
  • Exercise can be a good source of social support. You can meet new friends, join a team or league, participate in an exercise clbad and enjoy these social activities for a double dose of stress relief.
  • Better physical health can mean better mental health through stress reduction. Stress can cause illness and exercise can improve your overall health and longevity by strengthening your immune system.
  • Exercise can be an obstacle to future stress and a way to cope with the current stress.

Before starting an exercise program aimed at improving your physical and / or mental health, it is important to consult your doctor to determine the best form of exercise and level of intensity appropriate to your condition. physical.
