Most people are worried that science is going too far with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and that, based on science fiction, the very idea of giving the machines the power to create could be bad (Terminator, whoever?).
However, Google's artificial intelligence is doing very interesting things that should get people's attention.
According to a new research paper, Google and various health professionals have created an algorithm that has been shown to detect lung cancer. The journal, published in Nature Medicine, noted that the AI was even better than the trained radiologists who scanned medical scanners for signs of cancer.
In this series of tests, the accuracy was 94.4%.
Six radiologists and the algorithm were then tested to determine how well they detected cancer of slides that they were not able to consult before.
When radiologists received additional information in the form of tomograms, the algorithm was able to function in the same way as the professionals. When no other information was provided to radiologists, the IA surpbaded the six radiologists with fewer false positives (11%) and fewer false negatives (5 percent).
Although human doctors may think this makes them look bad, the idea is that ultra-smart computers can be used to detect cancer. This would mean fewer mistakes to tell people with cancer they do not have. Thus, improve the quality of life of all.
