Google now activates the Bitcoin symbol on keyboards on iOS mobile devices, suggesting that the computer giant recognizes Bitcoin as the current currency.
The legitimization of Bitcoin by Google
IOS mobile device users can now use the serif B capital letter, crossed by two vertical lines. Crypto reporter Tim Copeland explains:
"To access it, make sure to use the Google keyboard, not just the default Apple keyboard, and hold down the dollar symbol to display a list of many of the world's major currency symbols. The Bitcoin symbol is located on the far left. "
In fact, Google's decision to incorporate the cryptocurrency symbol into its keyboard could be Google's second step to consider bitcoin as a dominant currency.
In September 2018, the technology giant lifted the ban imposed four months earlier on advertising crypto-currencies. Scott Spencer, director of product management at Google's Sustainable Ads, said:
We do not have a crystal ball to know where the future goes with crypto-currencies, but we have seen enough harm to the consumer or a potential for harm to the consumer, this is an area we want to address with extreme caution.
According to Copeland, these Google initiatives may not help to significantly increase the adoption rate of Bitcoin,
But the Internet giant has so far not supported crypto-currencies, although a recent ban on announcing cryptographic projects has recently been lifted, suggesting that Google may be preparing for crypto: a small step, but a positive step.
Technology giants boost support for Bitcoin
The symbol representing the Bitcoin currency unit is already part of the Unicode Standard, version 10, since June 2017. The Unicode character badigned to Bitcoin is 20BF.
Thus, for example, Microsoft products allow users to insert the cryptocurrency symbol, ₿, by typing 20BF plus ALT. In addition, Microsoft accepts Bitcoin payments for multimedia content on its Windows and Xbox stores.
Although Apple has not yet officially activated the Bitcoin symbol, last September, its iOS12 mobile operating system had added two Bitcoin glyphs in the Siri Shortcuts application.
Now, bitcoin enthusiasts expect Google to further legitimize cryptocurrency by making the Bitcoin symbol available for Android devices as well.
