Google Maps increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, warns an expert

SSatellite navigation aids such as Google Maps could damage people's brains and could even contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease, a navigation expert warned.

David Barrie, CBE, former British diplomat, who has written extensively on natural navigation, said that humans had developed a keen sense of their environment and their place in the world over hundreds of thousands of years, what was disappearing with technology.

And he said he was concerned that GPS is preventing people from developing the resilience that their brains need later.

In Alzheimer's, the hippocampus is one of the first areas to deteriorate, preventing a person from remembering instructions and navigating.

Speaking at the Hay Festival, Mr. Barrie said it was "very sad" to see people move their heads by following smart phone cards.

"Crucially, as we become more and more dependent on these electronic gadgets, we are increasingly cut off from the natural world," he said.

"This feeling of emersion in nature and losing yourself in the natural world and the extraordinary rewards that flow from it, well, you lose it.

"There can also be deeper problems. The parts of your brain that may be responsible for your ability to navigate need exercise and if they are not, they are literally shrinking.
