Google sets basic standards for temporary workers after the outcry

From an email seen by The GuardianAdrienne Crowther of the company told the workers that the deadline was necessary. "We would like it to be as simple as switching a switch and turning it on tomorrow," she wrote. A spokeswoman confirmed the changes, but said they were in development "for some time" and that most partners would respect the new conditions by 2020.

The turmoil stems in part from Google's decision on March 8 to shorten the contracts of 34 temporary workers on the Google Assistant "Personality" team (ie, those who determine how artificial intelligence responds to Questions). This not only left them looking for work but also highlighted the lack of safety nets. Google did not even let the full-time staff offer support, fearing that the company would be "legally responsible," says the workers' letter. A manager finally allowed full-time employees to empathize with the temporary workers.

This will not necessarily satisfy the entrepreneurs, however. They noted that Google did not meet the key requirements of the letter, including requests to pay the term of the initial contracts and to convert temporary workers to full-time status. Google has already said "it works"[s] transition from temporary agents to full-time positions, but this does not seem to be the case for the 34 people who lose their jobs, and the new standards are not likely to put an end to this problem.
