There is relief on the horizon for farmers in the Upper East region affected by the perennial floods caused by the spill of the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso.
President Nana Akufo-Addo revealed Thursday in Parliament, while delivering her third speech on the state of the nation, that there were plans in place to avoid perennial floods.
"In the short term, the white Volta will be unraveled this year, along with discussions with Burkinabe people to regulate the flow of spills and mitigate their impact," he said.
The spill of the Bagre Dam has, over the years, resulted in constant loss of life and property damage.
The eleven affected districts in the Northern Region include Karaga, East Gonja, South Nanumba, Tolon Kumbungu, Bole, West Gonja, Savelugu, Nanton, East Manprusi, Yendi and West Mamprusi.

The districts of Bawku West, Binduri and Talensi will be affected in the Upper East region, while those of Nandom, Lawra, Nadowli and Wa West will be affected in the Upper West region.
The districts of North Nkwanta, East Krachi, West Krachi and Krachi Nchumuru in northern Volta will also be affected, as will the districts of Afram Plains North and Afram Plains South of the region. 39; East.
For some time now, farmers in Pwalugu and other areas have been asking the government to negotiate with the Burkinabe authorities so that water from the Bagre dam can be treated piecemeal.
Farmers who live far from the White Volta, where their farms are located, are still worried and fear that their crops will be destroyed as soon as the Burkina Faso control authority, SONABEL, announces that it will start. to pour water from the dam.

But the government has badured that in the coming week, tThe Housing Ministry will receive a report on a feasibility study carried out by the Chinese company SinoHydro for the construction of a dam in Pwalugu.
"This will serve as a receptacle to contain the volume of water discharged from the Bagre dam for irrigation and electricity generation purposes. This will be the permanent solution to the problem of the Bagre Dam, "said President Akufo-Addo.
He said the Ministry and Parliament would seek approvals for the construction of the Pwalugu Dam.
