The gallopers have been parked for years at the Institute of Local Government
The government has decided to auction the gallopers stationed for years at the local government institute, said Finance Assistant Minister Kwaku Kwarteng.
The move, he said, was made necessary by the government's apprehension about the perception that the decaying vehicles would give the taxpayer.
The 86 vehicles were brought for use by district chiefs throughout the country under the Rawlings administration.
But they were abandoned for nearly 17 years because the Kufuor government of the time had refused to distribute them to different bademblies, citing the lack of a written contract for their purchase.
Subsequently, successive governments have failed to reach an amicable settlement with vehicle importers, African Automobile Company Limited, for their use.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday in Accra, Kwarteng said many of the vehicle problems that prevented previous governments from distributing them for the intended purpose were resolved.
"Given the rate at which these vehicles are deteriorating, we decided to divest them" and the government plans to do so before the end of the year.
"I can confirm that the decision to dispose of the vehicles has been made and we will do so. We are all concerned that the mere presence of these vehicles suggests to taxpayers that their money will not be used wisely. "
"We are extremely concerned about this situation and that is why we are taking steps to have these vehicles eliminated as soon as possible."
"The badessment is over … once we know how much the vehicles cost, we can do it at auction," he added.
