Ghana is currently in a worse situation than the West African oil country has turned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for bailout, said opposition legislator Isaac Adongo.
The Bolgatanga MP said that the financial indiscipline of the Akufo-Addo administration had inflated the total payroll of 14 billion GHS left by the administration of the National Democratic Congress (NCD) to 22 billion from SGH.
He told Parliament that if the government did not stop the indiscipline, the payroll of the GHS22b would be doubled by 2020.
His comments follow a speech on the economy that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta delivered to Parliament on Thursday, March 28.
Mr. Ofori-Atta told the legislature in particular that the discussions that took place during the recent visit of Dr. Hafez Ghanem, Vice President of the World Bank for Africa, to Ghana, show that Bretton Woods institution believes in Ghana's agenda beyond aid. the Akufo-Addo administration.
He said: "Our recent success in the Eurobond demonstrates the clear confidence of the international community in the hard work we have done. We know this trust is part of our vision of Ghana Beyond Aid.
"The Vice President of the World Bank for the African Region visited Ghana from March 24 to 26, 2019. The purpose of this visit was to discuss with the government and other stakeholders World Bank projects for Ghana and explore areas for future collaboration.
"The discussions focused on fundraising efforts for economic transformation for Ghana's achievements, beyond aid and all the goals of sustainable development."
However, commenting on this address, Mr. Adongo said, "We are worse than when we entered the IMF. In 2016, our payroll amounted to 14 billion GHS. Today we are dealing with 22 billion GHS, a 53% expansion in the public sector. On average, we add 21% of our public payroll each year.
"If it continued by 2020, we would have doubled our payroll that we left (NDC)."
He added: "It's the pinnacle of indiscipline."
