Abandoned cars
Abandoned vehicles purchased by the Government of Ghana since 2001 have finally been auctioned.
According to the Ministry of Finance, seventy-five Hyundai Galloper vehicles have been sold.
The vehicles have been abandoned at the Madina Local Government Studies Institute in Accra since 2001.
The Hyundai Galloper vehicles were to be distributed to the various municipal, metropolitan and district bademblies, but the then administration, John Agyekum Kufuor, took office after the 2000 election, n '. has failed to do so, citing the absence of written contract for the purchase of vehicles.
Deputy Minister of Finance Kwaku Kwarteng said the government had solved the legal problems related to the vehicles and was ready to dispose of them.
He said: "We went to look at the vehicles and some of the problems with these vehicles were tried by the courts, which made it difficult not only for the customs, but also for the government, to eliminate them."
Nearly 20 years after the government bought them, the vehicles were not used for the intended purpose because of what some government officials said was the challenge of paying to importers, African Automobile Limited (AAL).
In 2012, the amount claimed by the company amounted to $ 1.5 billion, information suggesting a daily interest of 50 GH for each vehicle.
They were intended for distribution to district bademblies but were abandoned by the Kufuor government on the grounds that AAL had no contract with the government.
