The government is spending more than $ 1.4 billion to expand access to safe drinking water across the country, said Cecilia Dapaah, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.
She said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo in 2020 paved the way for eight water projects that would together benefit some four million people.
The minister made this known during a press briefing ahead of a working visit to the Volta region, to see ongoing projects in the water and sanitation sector, and said that the projects reflected the focus on achieving the sustainable development goals.
“Last year, we had the privilege of seeing the president cut the ground for eight major water projects costing $ 1.40 billion that will provide 4.5 million people with access. at the water.
“This is a huge contribution to the water sector,” she noted and said the rural water supply projects also launched by the president would serve around an additional $ 1.5 million. , while the burden of waterborne diseases was eliminated.
She said that the President was keen to ensure that the implementation of the project had an impact on the economies of the host communities and particularly benefited young people.
The Minister, along with the heads of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, inspected the works of the five district water project in Adidome in the central district of Tongu, phase three of which is underway. at a cost of 11.5 million euros, and which would extend water to communities in Adaklu district.
She said project stakeholders are taking into account population growth and migration by providing long-lived facilities and will serve all communities living along transmission lines.
Ms. Dappah also joined the CEO of Jospong Group of Companies and the Volta Regional Minister to inspect the works of a mega integrated waste treatment plant for the municipality of Ho.
An ambitious government enterprise in the 16 regions, the waste treatment and recycling plant is in partnership with the Jospong group and is expected to help address the threat of accumulated waste once completed.
The Minister will also visit ongoing sector projects in Keta Municipality and South Tongu District.
