President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
President Nana Akufo-Addo ensured that the government's projects would be shared equitably among the different regions, including the newly created ones.
The President gave badurances during a ceremony held at Flagstaff House to present the constitutional instrument for the creation of the Northeast region.
"I want to badure residents of [new] region that government projects and structures will also be transferred between regions, "said the president.
The president also said that the oldest city of the East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly, Nalerigu, had been chosen as the capital of the Northeast region.
Northern Regional Minister Salifu Saeed has also been appointed Acting Minister for the region, which has an estimated population of 440,000.
The President believes that "with dedication and commitment, the Northeast region will develop and touch the lives of every resident and help us build the great nation of Ghana we all want."
The districts forming the new region are the municipality of East Mamprusi, the municipality of West Mamprusi, the district of Bunkprugu-Nakpanduri, the district of Yunyoo-Nasuan, the district of Mamprugu-Moagduri and the district of Chereponi.
President Akufo-Addo also noted that the north-eastern part of the former Northern Region constituted the breadbasket of the region and that it was "appropriate that we help facilitate its rapid development".
In the referendum, residents of the northeastern northern region unanimously approved the creation of the northeastern region with 99.67% of the votes cast.
Like the other new regions, the Northeast region will receive 20 million GHc as seed capital.
President Akufo-Addo has also set up a committee to badess the needs of the new regions, five of which are awaiting legal support.
The remaining regions pending the submission of their constitutional instruments are North West, Ahafo, Bono East, Oti and Savannah.
