As part of efforts to minimize road conflicts in the country, a total of 6.5 million GH ¢ has been approved by the government to defend the course of road safety in the country.
Transportation Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah made the announcement when he spoke at the "Meet the Press" series on Tuesday, February 19, to outline the government's position on current issues regarding its ministry.
He noted, among other things, that the upward trend in the number of deaths due to road accidents required urgent attention, which is why the government made the decision to take the necessary steps to reduce the threat.
He said that although work has been done to improve the quality of poor roads in the country, many such roads still need to be repaired to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
He again noted that the "blatant" disregard of motorists, particularly "okadamen", for security practices, constituted a constant threat that deserved serious attention and that the Government was considering intensifying public knowledge of road use and punishing offenders.
"The state of road accidents continues to worry the government. Motorists were killed and others injured by unruly behavior and their disrespect for the highway code. In this regard, I would like to express my gratitude to Nana Addo for providing $ 6.5 million to address road safety issues in the country, "he said.
Reports indicated that between January and December last year, a total of 13,645 road accidents caused 2,3041 deaths and 13,677 injuries were recorded last year.
