As a result of widespread flooding in the capital, the government has released some 197 million GHc for the unloading of gutters as part of efforts to remedy the situation.

Parts of the capital have experienced severe floods lately.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization, about 10 people lost their lives during the recent floods.

Addressing the media during a familiarization tour of the city, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, said the contract had already been awarded.

"I want to say publicly that the Government of Ghana has allocated one hundred and ninety-seven million Cedis to the Department of Public Works and Housing and that contracts have been awarded. The Department of Public Works and Housing is responsible for flood control. We just had a meeting last Friday. They will pierce and defuse our gutters. When that is done, we do not expect anything loose in our gutters, "she said.

The death of five people was confirmed after a shower of about 3 hours Sunday.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), a middle-aged man would have been found dead in Ablekuma, while another would have been found in Odorna in Adabraka, all in the Greater Accra region, although two people drowned in this region.

Last week, a similar incident caused five deaths in Accra, raising concerns about the city's preparations for the 2019 rainy season, which is expected to be more intense than that of 2018.
