The construction of the sports stadium of the University of Ghana began in 2004 by the construction company Consar under the regime of former president John Agyekum Kufour.
But the project was abandoned in 2009, as the Ghana Education Trust Fund, GETFund, decided not to continue financing the construction of the facility.

However, President Akufo-Addo, under whose supervision Ghana has won the bid for the Pan-African Games of 2023, will be the first time in its history to release funds for the completion of one of the sports facilities that will play a key role in the quest of the nation to organize a successful competition.
"Funds have also been released for the completion of the University of Ghana sports stadium, launched by the NPP government, led by Kufuor, but abandoned shortly after 2009", said the president during his speech on the state of the nation of 2019 on Thursday.
At the same time, President Akufo-Addo badured Ghanaians that competitive football would return soon.
"The Ghanaian people are [also] in the expectation of a return to normal all activities related to football as soon as possible, and the standards committee employs to ensure that they respect the March deadline ", he said.
Ghanaians are eager to attend the national football that hints at fans since the premiere of the documentary "Number 12", which revealed several rots in the game in June of last year.
The Standards Committee (CN) was formed to replace the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Federation (GFA) to restructure Ghanaian football. President Akufo-Addo badured the nation that CN was working hard to meet the deadline of March 31 to bring football back to normality.
