The government's program to reorganize railways to facilitate dynamic economic activities is ongoing and remains a priority for its priority projects, said Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister of Finance at Accra Monday.
In this regard, he stated that the Government had launched several projects in the railway sector, noting that the Ghana Railway Company Limited had completed the rehabilitation of the 30 km narrow-gauge railway line between Accra and Tema, which had allowed the restoration of pbadenger rail. services in the hallway.
Mr Ofori-Atta said during the presentation of the Mid-Year Budget Policy Review of the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy and Supplementary Budget to Parliament in Accra.
He added that the 40 km line from Achimota to Nsawam had been rehabilitated and that trials had already begun in anticipation of the relaunch of suburban commuter services between Accra and Nsawam to reduce congestion on the corridor.
Mr. Ofori-Atta said that preparatory activities for the extension of the narrow-gauge repair works in Koforidua had begun.
He stressed the commitment of a strategic investor in the development of the 303 km normal-gauge eastern railway line between Accra and Kumasi, with a secondary line connecting Busoso to Atiwa via Kyebi, with the help of the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) option with: Ghana's participation was in the final stages of procurement.
The finance minister said that the rehabilitation of the Kojokrom-Tarkwa section of the West Railway line is progressing steadily and that the project is currently 60% complete and employs more than 300 people.
Ofori-Atta said that construction work on the Kojokrom-Manso section of the 22 km West Railway (normal track) was in two phases.
"Phase I (Kojokrom-Eshiem) is 45% complete and a major railway bridge is under construction in Eshiem," he added.
On the Tema-Mpakadan (Akosombo) railway line, Ofori-Atta said significant progress has been made and the project is currently at about 45% and is expected to be 58% completed. here at the end of 2019.
He added that feasibility studies had also been undertaken on the proposed Greenfield 670 km rail corridor linking Kumasi to Paga, better known as the Central Spine.
He has already recalled that a contract had been signed for the development of the first phase of Kumasi in Bechem, a distance of about 103 km at the beginning of this year.
He said that the old railway training school and two workshops located in Essikadu had been the subject of major renovation and renovation work.
"The training school needs to be modernized and equipped with modern teaching and learning facilities to build capacity and skills development in the rail sector," he said.
