Railway Development Minister Joe Ghartey
The Ministry of Railway Development, in collaboration with the Ghana Railway Company Limited, has reactivated Accra-Tema rail services as part of the government's desire to improve rail transport in the country.
The government is trying to restore the rail link and improve access between the capital and the industrial and maritime center of Ghana to facilitate economic and administrative operations.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the launch, Railway Development Minister Joe Ghartey expressed his delight at seeing the railways , inactive for months, reactivated to continue its operations.
Ghartey noted that the difficulties faced by the company had dissolved, but that "the government has injected money into its operations to ensure its optimal operation again".
He said the launch should unveil their new services to the public and also announce free rail transportation between Accra and Tema for two weeks.
The minister advised the Ghana Railway Company Limited workers to consider rail service as theirs: "When the service collapses, it is your job that has collapsed and so you have to deploy many efforts to ensure its survival. "
Mr. Ghartey informed the public that the railway tracks belonged to the people of Ghana and that they could be destroyed if people traded them and that a collaborative effort was needed to protect the tracks.
Accra Tema rail services were set up to connect the two cities by rail, but services were truncated by the end of 2017 due to financial and other difficulties.
