The interior minister said the government, together with the Prisons Council, was reviewing the non-custodial sentences regime to focus more on the rehabilitation aspect of prisons.
Ambrose Dery said the prisons were a very important institute, which needed help to ensure good rehabilitation, as well as for the training and skills development of prison inmates in the country.
Expressing during the commissioning of the ark and guard post of the headquarters of the Ghana Prison Service in Accra on Friday, congratulated the two institutions for their corporate responsibility in l '39; Improving security at prison headquarters.
The archway and guardhouse were built by the Service with the support of Glico Life Company and Hoama Engineering Limited.
The commissioning continues the implementation of Strategic Objectives No. 5 of the Ten-Year Strategic Development Plan of the Ghana Prison Service, which aims to modernize its physical structures across the country and revitalize and project the image of the Service. .
He said that security was a collective responsibility and that the government could not deal with it alone, but with the support of all citizens.
The minister said the government has made arrangements with the private sector to help prisons to support the professional training of prisoners.
He therefore called on the prison officers to redouble their efforts and enhance the image of the service.
Patrick Darko Missah, Director General of Ghana Prison Service, said that the Service had a catalog of development initiatives executed, while others were still under construction at headquarters.
Some projects include painting Cantonment's deformed prison barracks, paving the way from the prison headquarters to the senior officers' mess, building the fence wall of the prison headquarters, and completing the layout of a modern transit area of a floor intended for sportsmen.
He stated that the significance of the arcade and the guardhouse transcended the simple fact of adding grandeur and aesthetic values to the architectural landmarks of the prison headquarters.
More importantly, it would enhance the effectiveness of control and surveillance of the safety of vehicle and pedestrian movements to headquarters premises.
Mr. Darko said, "I am confident that we will behave responsibly to achieve the desired goal of its construction, while maintaining its quality for posterity."
Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Ambbadador Extraordinary of Prisons, said the construction had embellished the headquarters and the barracks.
He congratulated the leaders of the Ghana Prison Service on their initiative to enhance the image of the Service.
