Elmina (C / R), 9 July, GNA – Vice President
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reaffirmed the government's commitment to build 10
fish landing sites along the country's fishing communities.
He stated that project funding had been
secure and the work will start soon.
Beneficiary communities include: Teshie
in the Greater Accra region, Axim and Dixcove in the West region; Elmina
Winneba, Mumford, Senya-Bereku, Fetteh-Gomoah and Moree in the central region;
and Keta in the Volta region.
Vice President Bawumia announced this when
he joined the chiefs and the people of Elmina in the central region to celebrate
the annual Edina Bakatue festival, marking the beginning of the fishing season.
It was celebrated on the theme: "Buy
products made in Ghana; use products made in Ghana and promote jobs for
youth".
The Vice-President stated that measures had been taken
taken to protect the coastline from the erosive effects of the sea, noting that
the construction of sea defense walls along the coast was under way in some
coastal communities.
He said that the navy and the maritime police were
also helped to strengthen patrols in the country's territorial waters
combat illegal fishing and other illegal practices at sea.
Dr. Bawumia congratulated Nana Kojo Conduah VI,
Omanhene of Elmina and the leaders of the region to choose a theme that was in
synchronize with President Akufo-Addo's vision of building a Ghana beyond the aid,
mobilize internal resources for the development of the country.
He said the inclusive government
development program has been designed to improve the quality of life of all
Ghanaians, without distinction of geographical, religious or ethnic affiliation.
Dr. Bawumia stated that the grbad had been cut for the
construction of the Elmina Heritage Bay project, noting that the first phase of the
the project is underway with improved durbar grounds and a respectful garden
built.
He urged the residents of Elmina to take
advantage of government flagship programs such as Planting for Food and
Jobs, breeding for food and jobs and plantation for export and rural development.
"To my brave farmers, in our effort
to produce more, let us not forget future generations. We have to do
all that is possible to protect and preserve our environment for their use.
"Chainsaw operations remain a serious
threat to the environment. The uncontrolled use of pesticides and weed killers is
also a serious threat to the environment and our health and I urge our
officials of agriculture to step up education on the use of chemicals,
Vice President Bawumia advised.
He expressed the gratitude of the Government
the leaders and the people of Elmina for their cooperation and the badurance of
Government's ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Ghanaians
Nana Kojo Conduah VI, Omanhene of Edina
Traditional Zone, Government Leased for the Construction of Elmina Heritage Bay
Tourism Project and urged residents of the region to unite to support
government development initiative.
He congratulated the president Nana Akufo-Addo
government for the deployment of many social interventions over the past two years and a
half-years to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.
