The President has, in principle, accepted the request of the Prime Minister of Barbados to send some 375 Ghanaian nurses to the Caribbean island to work in several medical institutions of their government.

This became clear when presidents Nana Akufo-Addo and Mia Amor Mottley had bilateral talks Friday in Bridgetown, Barbados, after a day-long working visit to the country.

Addressing a press conference after the bilateral talks, the Barbadian Prime Minister said: "We have indicated that we are looking for just under 400 nurses, so it is not a small number, and we really think that it is a wonderful opportunity for cooperation between our two countries ".

She also noted that the initial promise to secure nurses and offer joint training programs in the future was also being considered, all with the goal of securing the health sector in Barbados.

Barbados is currently facing a serious shortage of nurses.

For his part, the president said, "We have a surplus of nurses and putting them all in our public health system is one of my headaches. There have been many (nurses) produced, with which, for several years, we have not been able to do anything.

He said that once back in Ghana, the prime minister would hear him talk about the case.

President Akufo-Addo has agreed to reactivate a cultural, technical and scientific agreement signed in 2005 between the two countries, an agreement that has been dormant for 14 years.

Discussions also focused on tourism and transport, with both countries agreeing to work on an air services agreement. This will establish direct air links between the two countries, to boost trade and people-to-people contacts.

On renewable energy, the President expressed the wish to work with Barbados, a giant country in this field, and reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to increase the renewable energy component of its energy mix.

As evidence of the close relations between Ghana and Barbados, the President expressed his attachment to the establishment of a consulate in Barbados, Barbados having to establish a High Commission in Accra by end of 2019.
