The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor, reiterated the government’s determination to support the activities of small-scale miners to improve their operations.
He explained that the government was not against small-scale mining, but rather against irresponsible mining practices that ultimately destroyed the environment and livelihoods.
Speaking to the Bibiani section of the Ghana National Small Scale Mines Association (GNASSM) in the North West region, Jinapor said the government is focused on launching appropriate policy interventions to support and protect small-scale miners.
The meeting was part of the Minister’s tour of the Region.
Mr Jinapor said the government bought a 100 mercury-free processing machine to, among other things, help miners work sustainably using the right approach.
“What we don’t want is for you to work anyway,” he said.
Bibiani Section Public Relations Officer (GNASSM) Nana Ebim Kwaku III identified some concerns from miners, including delays in acquiring small-scale mining licenses.
He asked the minister to help him solve the problems.
