Government urges legislation to regulate social enterprises

The government was urged to introduce a bill to improve the understanding of social activities and to create a more favorable environment for their development.

There are currently around 26,000 social enterprises in Ghana that are purpose-oriented organizations that negotiate to produce social and environmental impact that benefits the communities in which they are located.

"There is a lack of clarity; people do not necessarily know how to access information, they do not know what kind of help they can get from the government and, of course, the fact that social enterprises do not have a legal form; it's a big gap, so it's necessary to know what kind of gender lens that investors should consider, "she said.

Agyeman-Togobo spoke with JoyBusiness at a forum on women's economic empowerment through social enterprise, in the context of the 2019 month of Women in Social Enterprise in Ghana (WISE) organized by the British Council in Ghana.

The forum resulted in the launch of the latest British Council research report on "An activist to undertake: the role of social enterprise in empowering women in Ghana".

The report, which aims to sort out the problems of gender inequality in social enterprises, also recommends that governments ensure that the funding and support available for social enterprises is communicated and co-ordinated in a timely manner. effective.

He also said that the government should set up a working group on social enterprises with a specific mandate on gender equality to provide expertise and policy recommendations. This should attract not only well-established social entrepreneurs in Accra, but also those operating at the community level in different regions.

The report further stated that the working group should have cross-sectoral representation with stakeholders from business, government, academia and social entrepreneurs and should be gender balanced.

The report also stressed the need for education. The government and social enterprises should work in partnership to develop the use of social entrepreneurship education in schools, with particular emphasis on addressing inequities between schools. equality.

The need for public awareness and career guidance was also emphasized.
