Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Wednesday
declared zero tolerance for persons who smuggled goods through the
neighboring countries in Ghana.

L & # 39; Authority
therefore promised to treat vehemently those who smuggle goods into the
country and deprive the State of the necessary income.

Monsieur Emmanuel
Kofi-Nti, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority has sounded the knell
caution during a familiarization visit to spare parts dealers in Abossey Okai,
merchants and traders in the Central Business District.

The visit was
also to access if traders benefited from the recent announced import fee reductions
by the government.

He expressed
worry about the situation and said when the Authority stop a vehicle with
contraband, the vehicle would be impounded, the goods confiscated and the
driver of the vehicle is pursued.

"There are laws
and we will enforce the law and we will use the arrest of some people
as an example and dissuasive for others. There will be no option to pay
trouble, "he said.

As part of
measures, he said that the GRA would increase the checkpoints at the borders of four
six to check contraband and advise importers to use approved routes,
adding that "when you are caught, we will not spare you".

Mr. Kofi-Nti
Because of high taxes in Ghana's ports, most importers have preferred
use the Togolese part, which led the Togolese side to record a growth of 300
while that of Ghana increased by 4.9% last year.

He said that it was
Concerned that some Ghanaian importers use the port of Togo and smuggle goods
in the country.

Mr. Kofi-Nti
explained the reduction in port dues did not concern about 70 selected articles
to be speculated on a social media platform, but it includes all the products that
came through the Ghanaian ports.

Mr Clement
Boateng, co-chairman of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, said that
Ghanaian traders in the region were not involved in the smuggling of goods, but others
the nationals were those involved in such activities.

"These are bad
practices detrimental to the country's development. They took
on the retail trade, "he said.
