GRA determined to collect more taxes | Economy

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expressed its determination to do everything in its power in accordance with the laws and to use innovative strategies to ensure that all taxable entities pay their appropriate taxes to support the country's development.

Mr. Paul Kwesi Ahiakpor, Deputy Commissioner of the GRA Customs Division in the Northern Region, who expressed his determination at a media evening in Tamale, therefore called on the taxable entities to voluntarily comply tax legislation to avoid sanctions.

The press evening was organized by the GRA in Tamale as part of efforts to deepen relations with the media in the region to help collect taxes.

GRA's revenue in 2018 in the region increased tax collection as the customs division collected 167 million GHc from a target of 68.40 million euros, the small tax office of Tamale (STO) has collected 27.6 million GHc against a target of 26.6 million, while Medium Tax Office (MTO) has collected 41.2 million GHc against 39.1 million in 2017.

For this year, the GRA Customs division in the region, Tamale MTO and Tamale STO, were responsible for collecting 78.03 billion GHc, 60.6 million GHc and 37 million GHc in that order.

Mr. Ebenezer Mensah, Acting Deputy Commissioner of GRA at MTO Tamale, said the GRA in the region is intensifying tax education to ensure a knowledgeable taxpayer population, among other strategies for To achieve the goal set for the year.

Mr Cephas Nelson Agoro, Director of Tamale STO, said that steps had been taken to streamline the registration of the tax identification number in order to broaden the tax net as well as the payment of taxes.

Alhaji Abdul Razak Saani, North Regional Director of the National Commission on Civic Education, asked the media to lead the crusade to raise citizens' awareness of the need to pay taxes, as no country can develop without taxes.

Alhaji Saani also urged the media to hold duty bearers accountable for how they spend tax revenues to encourage citizens to pledge to pay taxes.
