The company aims to deliver the royal shrimp from the tank to the tray within 24 hours.

An aquaculture company is launching what it claims to be the world's first shrimp farm, based on clean, sustainable water.

Great British Prawns aims to deliver the royal shrimp from the tank to the plate within 24 hours.

The hot water shrimp will be grown on his Stirlingshire farm.

The firm said the majority of the UK's royal shrimp were currently purchased frozen at farms in the Far East and Central America.

Great British Prawns added that his approach avoided freezing or air miles.

Royal shrimp – also known as Pacific white shrimp – will be grown in Balfron in more than 300 tons of water, capable of holding up to one million fresh shrimp. They will reach an average size of 25 g each.

Harvesting will begin this summer and shrimp will be available for hotels and restaurants within two hours of the farm.

The company has announced plans to open more farms across the UK in the future.

James McEuen, president and chief commercial officer, said: "Most shrimp have traveled 6,000 km to reach a British consumer as global demand continues to grow.

"But we know that consumers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of seafood production and that, to be sustainable, the future of aquaculture must truly be terrestrial.

"We aim to meet the growing demand from UK consumers for regional and local food production, ensuring the exceptional quality of their breeding, provenance and sustainability."
