Greenpeace activists stop BP oil rig in the North Sea

(Reuters) – Greenpeace activists suspended Sunday the development of an oil platform for BP Plc's exploration program in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.

Greenpeace activists demanded that one of the largest energy companies in the world immediately halt the drilling of new wells and invest only in renewable energy or shut down its operations and return money to investors.

Greenpeace said in a statement that a team of activists aboard ships had formed in addition to the 27,000-ton rig while she was trying to leave Cromarty Firth.

BP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
