Chief of Security of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Major Lawrence Appiah (rtd) warned that people sabotaging the power supply in the country were at risk of being shot.

He added that the soldiers, officials of the National Investigation Bureau (BNI) and the police would not hesitate to shoot anyone who was destroying gas pipes, electrical terminals or pylons to try to provoke an excessive shortage of electricity throughout the country.

Major Appiah met with reporters in Tema on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the GRIDCo media tour and the Cirrus Oil Services Limited gas pipeline inspection, which were burned by alleged arsonists.

Three alleged arsonists are believed to be responsible for the burning of gas pipelines around the Tema (TOR) oil refinery and the Volta River Authority (VRA).

Car tires were reported to have been used to burn pipelines, which at the time contained only water because they were still under construction.

Major Appiah said security was strengthened in the region, warning saboteurs "to pay close attention to what they plan to do".

He warned that "we have the soldiers … Of course, I am a soldier and I know we have rules of engagement, but we will not hesitate to stop but to shoot to kill because the Ghana must succeed. "

According to him, the perpetrators were "bad people trying to bring down Ghana".

About two weeks ago, a pylon belonging to GRIDCo was cut.

GRIDCo officials are convinced that the repair work on the pylon would be seriously completed.

The chief of security said the actions of the saboteurs could affect all Ghanaians, as well as their economic activities.

He noted that "we all know that the government is working hard to improve the power we all enjoy."

He lamented that "unfortunately, not many people are interested and they try to do things to reduce it."

He warned that "of course, we will not sit down and allow it."

At the same time, Daniel Amehoe, Health, Safety, Security and Environment Manager at Cirrus Oil Services Limited, said the pipeline fire would have caused a major disaster in the area if the pipelines were not under construction and contained only water.
