Some traders in Asankragwa, in the Western region, seemed helpless as their stores were destroyed by fire.

Although staff from Ghana’s National Fire Services were contacted to help put out the fire, they said the station’s fire supply had developed a fault in the past six months and had failed been fixed, so they couldn’t help.

The blaze which destroyed items worth thousands of Ghanaian cedis and razed four shops in parts of the market at 11 p.m. on Friday, December 18.

“When we called the fire department, they told us their fire supply had failed. Can you imagine that an entire town hall does not have a fire tender?

“So we young men here, including myself, had to take it upon ourselves to put out the fire,” a resident of Asankragwa told Accra-based Joy News, monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

Another added: “I am impressed with everyone’s contribution. We did our best to put out the fire. But I beg our leaders to settle our tenders, because next time we may not be so lucky.
