Guardiola hopes a speedy recovery from Bernardo

Pep Guardiola hopes that Bernardo Silva will be able to recover quickly after being sidelined by the defeat against Tottenham in the Champions League.

The Portuguese midfielder has been superb this season, both in the central midfield and on the right side.

He suffered a setback in training this week and was unable to play in our quarter-final first leg at the Spurs – but Guardiola hinted he would not stay away for too long.

"Bernardo could not play," he said at the post-match press conference. "During the season, there are injuries, problems and hope that next week, Bernardo will be in shape."

Benjamin Mendy also missed the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He made his first appearance since January in the FA Cup semifinal win over Brighton and Guardiola said it would have been too risky for him to play again three days later.

"Mendy, after four or five months of injury, had played last time and today, it was too much," he said.

Despite the defeat, Guardiola says that there are a lot of positives.

He was impressed by the quality of his team for most of the match and believes that City is likely to reverse the situation when the Spurs go to the Etihad in eight days.

"You do not expect to reach the semi-finals or quarter-finals and win 0-3," he said.

"We have another option, another chance and that's the goal.

"I did not expect to come here to resolve the situation. We would like to score a goal, we know how important it is, but the situation is as it is."

"Honestly, the team, when we do not play well, and you say we are not good, but I did not have that feeling.

"Especially most of the time in the first half, we did a good team job in the second half – we insisted a lot – it's just the quality they have and they score a goal."
