Midfielder Everton Gueye scored after 70 minutes, relaunching the ball at the bottom of the nets at close range after being set up by Liverpool star Sadio Mane.

It was the first match of the Nations Cup to use the VAR system (video badistant referee) and there were no controversial incidents. Benin were reduced to 10 men in the final phase when Olivier Verdon received a flawless red card for a foul by the last defender.

Coach of Senegal Aliou Cissé made a change to the team that defeated Uganda Keita Balde will replace striker Ismaila Sarr. The Beninese boss Michel Dussuyer changed three members of the team who shocked Morocco after a penalty shoot-out to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

Khaled Adenon missed because of a suspension and Seibou Mama and Jodel Dossou were benched by Seidou Baraze, Sessi D 'Almeida and Steve Mounie. It was only the third time countries met in a competitive match Senegal won 1-0 at home and drew 1-1 away in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.

Senegal has put the essence of early pressure with Benin happy to sit down and absorb it in front of a small crowd at the June 30 stadium with a capacity of 30,000 people in the Egyptian capital. But the first fear for Benin was self-inflicted: Goalkeeper Owolabi Kbadifa escaped a weak shot and had to quickly regain possession of the ball as Mane rushed forward.

Atrocement close

Mickael Pote, the veteran striker from Benin who scored twice in a draw with Ghana, is terribly close to putting the squirrels in front in the middle of the first half. He was smart enough to make a free kick in the penalty area and the ball was flying just past goalkeeper Alfred Gomis. A free kick at the other end allowed Kalidou Koulibaly to break the deadlock, but he almost did not connect with the balloon after escaping the defensive wall.

The pressure exerted by Senegal was intense at the close of the first half of the first period. The Verdon to the rescue by clearing a cross of Henri Saivet. Verdon and his teammates then blocked three close attempts by Teranga Lions end the impbade before the break.

Senegal got the ball in the net nine minutes after half-time, but the Algerian referee whistles offside and the VAR confirms that his decision is correct. A Gomis howler almost gave Benin a mid-second lead while he was misplacing his back pbad clearance and the ball was spinning away from the goal.

A little after, Senegal has been rewarded for its domination of possession and territory when Gueye burst into the box and shot at Kbadifa. Benin was fortunate not to be left behind in the minutes that followed, as Senegal Mane was denied by a marginal offside call.

Senegal will face Madagascar or Tunisia in semifinal Sunday.
