Self-help treatments given by telephone or in a group are as effective as individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to improve the acute symptoms of depression in adults, according to a review of randomized trials.

"The application of effective and acceptable CBT in a range of different formats will facilitate its implementation, dissemination and dissemination in different settings and patient populations," said the authors, led by Pim Cuijpers, from the Public Health Research Institute of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.1

They said the results should inform future guidelines for managing depression.
