Lionsgate released the first trailer for Scary stories to tell in the dark, the adaptation produced by del Toro from Alvin Schwartz's horror novels for children – and she seems messed up.

Schwartz's novels have been inspired by a variety of ancient folk stories and urban myths, ranging from nightmare scarecrows to ghosts to grim reaper.

The film's official synopsis reads: "We are in America in 1968. Change is blowing in the wind … but seemingly far removed from the hustle and bustle in the cities, lies the small town of Mill Valley where For generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has been looming large.

"It's in their house on the outskirts of the city that Sarah, a girl with horrible secrets, has turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that transcends time – stories that have a way to become too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah 's terrifying home.

Last April, it was announced that the film would be produced by del Toro, which he co-wrote with Daniel and Kevin Hageman. However, André Øvredal, the Norwegian director behind Troll hunter, will lead.

Scary stories to tell in the dark will be in American theaters in August 9. There is no confirmed date yet in the UK.
