The Ghanaian Traders Association (GUTA) is planning a gigantic demonstration against the government in three months if it does not enforce the laws governing the retail trade.
At a press conference in the Central Business District (Opera Square), Association President Joseph Obeng said that if the government does not act as planned, the time comes for the event its members would not be arrested.
"We will declare the manifestation of the Day of Fate in three months, where all other laws will not be respected if our demands are not taken into account," he said to the delight of traders.
Ghanaian traders have been at the throats of their foreign counterparts, especially Nigerians, who they claim have broken the laws of Ghana.
More recently, members of the Ghana Electrical Dealers Association, have locked foreign-owned shops and operating in the Opera Square.
Retailers have taken this step to ensure that the government enforces the law that reserves the retail trade to the premises.
Kofi Amanfo Ofori, a member of the Ghana Electrical Dealers Association, said their actions were aimed solely at enforcing the law.
"We ask foreigners to leave our market. We do not tell them to leave the country. They can sell wholesale but not retail.
According to Article 27 (1) of the GIPC Act, a person who is not a citizen or a business who is not wholly owned by a citizen shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or the provision of services on a marketplace, the trading or peddling or sale of goods in a stall at any location.
Ghanaian traders want this law, which has been left as a white elephant since its adoption, to be enforced by the authorities.
The president of GUTA said that if these laws were enforced, foreigners would not flout them as blatantly as they did.
"We do not want a situation to be attributed to GUTA or the trading community. If anything happens, it should be the state institutions that are responsible for carrying out their tasks.
"Foreigners who flout the law profit from a country so weak and timid in the application of its laws. It's so disappointing, "he lamented.
