The authorities have also informed some residences to make room for the flow
With more regular rainfall and water levels of the Weija Dam gradually reaching a safety level of 47 feet, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) will begin to pour excess water from the dam as part of routine measures to protect it.
This helps to ensure that the water is kept below the safe operating level of the dam to prevent it from collapsing.
GWCL management warned the general public, as well as institutions or organizations with properties downstream of the dam, to evacuate the area to prevent an emergency and protect lives and properties as the opening of spillway doors could cause flooding.
GWCL has also launched a door-to-door awareness campaign and also uses public address systems in communities to inform people about spills.
Opinion leaders, chiefs, badembly members, unit committee leaders, and school leaders have been briefed to help raise awareness among communities.
The GWCL is also liaising with National Security to flush the estuary to allow easy flow of water discharged into the sea.
Communities likely to be affected include: Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, McCarthy Lower Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kope, Tsokome and surrounding communities.
Homeowners and residents are encouraged to evacuate or take immediate precautionary measures to protect life and property.
In 2016, a number of communities in the Weija Dam in Ga South Township were gradually submerged following the GWCL dam spill.
Communities such as Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kokpe were flooded, while others, including Glefe and Opetekwei, were also seriously affected.
