Former National President of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Peter Mac Manu advised former Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson to be careful not to break the law.

According to him, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are deceiving Mr. Gyakye Quayson into making decisions he will regret in the future.

Speaking on The Probe on Sunday, he said: “I think the gentleman is being misled by his party so he should be very careful. The story of a similar incident is there for him to understand. Our own Adamu Sakande (sentenced to two years imprisonment for misrepresentation, perjury and deception of a public officer) followed the same path, was jailed and later, when released, died.

“I can tell you that when he came to contest the NDC election in the constituency, some of them even boycotted because they knew he had Canadian citizenship. So they are cheating on him.

His comment comes after former Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson joined the first in-person meeting of the Parliamentary Privileges Committee. despite a court ruling that annulled the 2020 legislative elections in the constituency.

The Court, chaired by Judge Kwasi Boakye, ordered a new election to be held in the constituency.

The petitioner’s case was that the MP at the time of filing his candidacy for the 2020 legislative elections, had not renounced his Canadian citizenship and therefore possessed dual citizenship.

On Monday August 2, lawyers for Mr. Quayson filed a notice of appeal in Cape Coast.

According to lawyers, the Cape Coast High Court ruling was not based on established laws and was in flagrant violation of the 1992 constitution.

Subsequently, on Thursday, August 5, Mr. Quayson requested a stay of execution to have the application of the decision suspended pending the hearing of his appeal.

Mr. Quayson said JoyNews that “there is a new law in effect that once you file these processes (stay of execution) it automatically binds you in a position where it is almost as if it is being heard.”

He stated that indeed, he can continue to exercise his duties as a Member of Parliament, which includes attending committee meetings.

However, Mr. Manu believes that it is in Mr. Quayson’s interest to obey the ruling of a competent court.

“Ultimately, he will regret because the law is supreme and we live under the rule of law in this country,” he added.
