Harrison Ford and George Lucas paid tribute to Peter Mayhew, the nice giant who played the original Chewbacca in the movie Star wars franchise, after his death on Tuesday.

The British actor was 74 when he died at his home in Texas, according to a family statement posted on Twitter.

"Peter Mayhew's family, with deep love and sadness, is sad to share the news of Peter's death," the statement said.

Official details regarding Mayhew's death have not been confirmed yet, but The Blast reported that he had had a heart attack.

After his death, his Star wars The co-stars quickly presented their condolences. Ford (who played Han Solo, Chewbacca's friend and co-driver in the film franchise) issued a statement in which he wrote: "Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, endowed with great dignity and noble character .

"He brought to Chewbacca these aspects of his own personality, as well as his spirit and grace.We were partners in the cinema and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him.

"He invested his soul in the character and gave great pleasure to the audience of Star Wars.

"Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we did together, he knew how much the fans of the franchise were important to his success and he was dedicated to it.
